2.10.2018 UZH DSI Lecture Series - Using smarthpones for measuring social networks with high resolution

Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Sune Lehmann from the Technical University of Denmark
Time: 18.15
Location: Kunsthalle Zürich, Limmatstrasse 270 (Tram Stop Dammweg or Escher Wyss Platz, Tram 4, 11, 13, 17)

Social networks have become prevalent in recent years due to online social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. However, the social embeddedness is neither new to human live nor limited to these online networks. In an unprecedented study at the Technical University of Denmark, 1000 freshman students were equipped with smartphones to study the dynamic social interactions within a large social system and across different levels of behaviour and communication. The smartphones collected information about face-to-face meetings (proximity estimated via Bluetooth), telecommunication (phone-calls, text messages), online social networks (Facebook friendships and interactions), geo-locations, wifi-signals, and a number of other data channels. Furthermore, participants answered questionnaires at multiple time points regarding their personality, study habits, and health-related behaviour.
The data collection lasted 2.5 years and resulted in a dataset that allows both, in-depth analysis of single individuals, small groups as well as insights into the dynamics of larger social networks. The talk will summarize the key findings from this seminal study, with an emphasis on communities in dynamic networks and human mobility.
Sune Lehmann is an associate professor at the Technical University of Denmark, an adjunct (full) professor at University of Copenhagen's Department of Sociology, and an adjunct associate professor at the Niels Bohr Institute (Department of Physics, University of Copenhagen). He is the associate director of the Center for Social Data Science at University of Copenhagen. Sune's work focuses on the dynamics of complex networks as well as processes unfolding on such evolving networks. He is the author of multiple papers in high-impact journals such as Nature an PNAS and his work has received world-wide press coverage.

8.10.2018 Application Deadline - UZH Digital Society Initiative - Breakfast of Ideas

DSI Breakfast of Ideas

*** Deutsche Version unten ***

Dear colleagues of the DSI network

We would like to invite PhD students, PostDocs, and Research Fellows to the first Breakfast of Ideas on January 25th, 2019!

The Breakfast of Ideas is aimed at connecting PhD students, PostDocs, and Research Fellows that work on issues of digitalization. We plan on having four yearly informal breakfast meetings in which participants present their research outputs or ideas and get feedback from an interdisciplinary peer group. We want to apply for a GRC peer monitoring grant, which would cover the associated costs.

What would we want from you?

  • Participation in the informal discussions with 10-15 peers.
  • A one-time 5-10 minute presentation (no slides needed) on your current research.
  • So that we can apply with the GRC, we would like you to commit to joining three out of the four sessions of the Breakfast of Ideas (end of January, end of March, end of June, and end of October 2019).

What do you gain from participating in the Breakfast of Ideas?

  • A fresh and healthy breakfast;
  • Being able to present your research to an interdisciplinary group in an informal setting;
  • Networking with various PhD students and Postdocs from different fields;
  • First-hand insights from other disciplines.
  • Strengthen competences for interdisciplinary work.

How will it work?

  • During our quarterly breakfast session at the UZH you listen to input presentations (5-10 minutes). After that there will be a 15-20 minutes open discussion. Per breakfast, we will likely have three input presentation and the get-together should last between 60 and 90 minutes.
  • We plan on recording the session and offering them as a podcast on the DSI and ITSL webpage; If you have reservation regarding your talk being published, e.g. because you do not want the ideas to be published just yet, this will be respected.

If you are a PhD student, PostDoc, or Research Fellow and interested in joining the Breakfast of Ideas get-together, please email us by October 7th (email to: aurelia.tamo-larrieux@uzh.ch or damian.george@rwi.uzh.ch)

  • Du erhältst ein frisches und gesundes Frühstück;
  • Du kannst deine Forschung einer interdisziplinären Gruppe in einem informellen Rahmen präsentieren;

Digital Health and Physics Nobel Prize

Dear friends of the nanoTalks,

fall has arrived and with that the announcement of this year's Nobel Prize laureates. Over the next few talks, our speakers will enlighten us about the scientific advances that were rewarded this year.
On Thursday October 25 at RAI-F-041, we will hear about trust in digital health applications and begin the Nobel Prize series with Laser Physics.

Talk 1: What is trust in digital health

Presented by Afua Adjekum, PhD Candidate at ETH, Department of Health Sciences and Technology
The impact of technology in healthcare cannot be underestimated. Thanks to wearable devices such as Fitbit and mobile apps, patients are being granted the opportunity to play more active roles in their healthcare. Nevertheless, how can we be sure that these apps and devices are trustworthy? Are there concerns, features or elements that you expect from digital health devices or services in order to trust them? In this talk, I will describe the current state of my research into trust in digital health by describing a few elements that are necessary for users to perceive these technologies as trustworthy.

Talk 2:  Nobel Prize in Physics 2018
Presented by Prof. Ursula Keller, Professor at ETH, Department of Physics
The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Ashkin, Mourou, and Strickland this year for their inventions in laser physics. In this talk, we will try to understand how their contribution revolutionized the use of light as an instrument for manipulation on a microscopic scale. The technology of high intensity laser pulses has already enabled technologies like eye surgery and is used as "optical tweezers" for viruses and bacteria.

We cordially invite you and your friends to join us for these exciting talks!
In the name of reatch,
the nanoTalks Team
